Costa Rica vs. Japan 2022 World Cup

There have been some exciting matches in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, like when Kylian Mbappe scored two goals to punch France’s ticket to the Round of 16 vs Denmark. On the other hand, there’s one match that stands out as a total humiliation and failure for the losing team. Costa Rica’s 7-0 loss to Spain was a total disaster for Luis Suarez’s Costa Rican team, they never even took a shot at goal. Somehow, they have to find a way to put it all behind them because they have another tough opponent in Japan up next. Japan had a stunning match against Germany, but fortunately, it was in their favor. Despite seemingly being outplayed for most of the match the Japanese took advantage of German mistakes for a 2-1 win. Can Costa Rica recover or will Japan secure their spot in the Round of 16?

Group E Table

Japan is in second place in the Group E standings, a win will clinch their spot in the Round of 16. Now would be the time for Japan to get the win they need because their last match of group play is against Spain. Costa Rica would need to win their next two matches to get out of the group stage. Their -7 goal differential will be a thorn in their sides if the group evens out on points. Essentially not only do they need to win back-to-back matches they need to win with clean sheets and by 3-4 goals. The World Cup is where legends are made so it’s possible. However, Japan will likely get the 3 points it needs to advance.

Costa Rica vs. Japan World Cup: Injury Report

Injuries are a major concern for Japan. Defender Hiroki Sakai suffered a hamstring injury against Germany and is doubtful against Costa Rica. Fellow defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was also injured against Germany and he didn’t seem match ready during Friday’s training in Doha. Japan’s Coach Hajime Moriyasu may be considering it wise to keep Sakai and Tomiyasu off the pitch and let the reserves play against the weaker opponent. Since if things don’t go well Japan will be in a must-win match against Spain to end the group stage.

If Costa Rica has any advantage going into their match with Japan, it’s they got through their soul-shattering match with Spain injury free. Suarez will need to take advantage of the opportunity provided if Japan’s defenders are unavailable for the contest.
