Villanova vs. Providence Preview, Game Details and Betting Lines

Villanova (19-6, 12-3) and Providence (21-2, 11-1) are two of the best teams in the Big East right now so Tuesday night’s showdown should be a good one. This game is going to be tight and will likely come down to guard play. Can Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore outplay Jared Bynum and Aljami Durham?

While the guard play will surely be the focus of the game, it may also come down to Friars big man Nate Watson’s size. He’s bigger than anybody on Villanova’s roster who gets regular playing time so that may be enough to tip the scales in Providence’s favor.

Villanova vs. Providence Game Preview

The visiting Wildcats are one of the better defensive teams in the country as they allow less than 63 points a game despite not having a true rim protector or big man. Obviously they do not block a lot of shots, but they make shooting elsewhere on the floor difficult. Opponents shoot about only 40 percent from the floor overall and about 31 percent from beyond the arc.

Providence has been a revelation this season as it was picked to finish seventh in the conference in the preseason. Coach Ed Cooley has done some of his best work this season and its mostly bee on the defensive end of the court. The Friars allow less than 65 points a game and generally take care of the ball with only 12 turnovers per game. One of their biggest advantages is getting to the free throw line as they do it over 21 times a game and average almost 16 makes a game too.

Should Villanova win this game, they gain a full game on Providence to get closer to their usual spot atop the Big East. But the Friars have been so good that they may still run away with the conference. Villanova will have its hands full with a Friars team that doesn’t back down from anyone and is basically playing with house money at this point in the season.
