The U.S. Paralympics and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs joined up to develop an event for disabled veterans and wounded, ill or injured service members to come together in sporting competitions. This is how the Valor games came to be.

The goals of the Valor games are to promote a healthy and active lifestyle as well as personal empowerment, and strengthening community .

The first Valor games were held in Chicago in 2011.

The 2013 Valor Games Southwest paralympics are now underway here in San Antonio, and a few San Antonio Spurs were on hand Tuesday to participate in a 3-v-3 wheelchair basketball exhibition, at the Mission Concepcion Sports Park.

San Antonio Spurs Matt Bonner, Aron Baynes, and Tiago Splitter teamed up to take on a championship winning wheelchair basketball team.

Other events include cycling, air guns, archery, kayaking, and powerlifting among others.
