The Last Minute: Spurs’ Loss to 76ers

With 1:17 left in the fourth quarter Monday during the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Joel Embiid had just made a 15-foot jumper to bring the 76ers within two points of the Spurs.

The video below breaks down the final minute of the game and shows how the Spurs had several chances to win the game and one key mistake on defense when they had a two point lead and 10 seconds left.

Here’s what the Spurs said about the mistake on defense where Shake Milton made the go-ahead 3-pointer with seven seconds left.

“He didn’t shake free, it was a defensive mistake,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich of Milton getting the open 3-pointer.

“The inbound, he wanted me to be in to faceguard Embiid but also for me to get back right away,” said Dejounte Murray of the instructions from Popovich on the possession. “That was a mistake on my end, not getting back right away when the ball inbounded.”

“We was loaded up, we figured they were going to go down to Embiid,” recalled DeMar DeRozan of that possession. “I think we were more conscious of trying to help whoever was guarding Embiid instead of just trying to stay home and not give up a three.”

“The young kid took a big shot, gotta give him credit, he hit it,” said DeRozan of Milton. “If he missed it, we’d probably be here telling a different story.”

“Everybody’s sick to their stomach,” said Murray after the loss. “We fought so hard and we had the game in our hands so at the end of the day that’s all we can do. You got to take the positive out of it, show that we fought and fought. And get ready for Denver.”
