Friday just before free agency negotiations began, the San Antonio Spurs announced Chimezie Metu had been waived.

The Spurs had until November 29 before $500,000 of Metu’s $1.6 million salary would have guaranteed. His full salary would have guaranteed on February 24.

Once rookie Devin Vassell signs his contract, the Spurs will have 10 players on guaranteed contracts. The team has until today (Friday) to waive or guarantee Trey Lyles’ salary for next season.

Tyler Zeller is also on a non-guaranteed contract the Spurs have to decide on by February 24.

The Spurs have already made Jakob Poeltl, Drew Eubanks, and Quinndary Weatherspoon restricted free agents as free agency opens.

In his two seasons with the Spurs, Metu averaged 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in 47 games with the Spurs.

Last season, he could never get into the rotation for San Antonio and spent time in Austin prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Drew Eubanks ended up passing Metu in the rotation.
