Spurs assign Josh Primo, Joe Wieskamp to Austin

If you were hoping to see more minutes for San Antonio Spurs rookie guards Joshua Primo or Joe Wieskamp, you’ll have to take a drive up to Cedar Park as both players were assigned to the G-League’s Austin Spurs today.

Primo and Wieskamp will be joining Austin in training camp, which begins today in San Antonio.

San Antonio’s first-round selection in the 2021 NBA Draft (12th overall), Primo has appeared in two of the team’s four games this season, averaging 2.5 points in 3.0 minutes. Primo also played in all five of the Spurs preseason games, averaging 5.8 points in 9.7 minutes.

There’s been some excitement around blog here the arrival of the 18-year-old Primo after his selection in the draft was immediately questioned. But his play in Summer League and preseason showed glimpses of what he is capable of and San Antonio has embraced the young guard since even resulting in some merchandise designs.

While Spurs fans will have to be patient to see Primo (and Wieskamp) in San Antonio, the Spurs have never been shy about utilizing their G-League team. They use the time in Austin to give younger players playing time while they continue to develop and learn the Spurs’ offensive and defensive schemes.

The Austin Spurs begin play next Friday against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. They make their home debut at the Cedar Park Center on November 14 against the Ciudad de Mexico Capitanes.
