Jordan Hall Signs Two-Way Contract With San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are signing Jordan Hall to a two-way contract, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. Hall joins Dominic Barlow as the team’s two two-way contracts for the 2022-2023 NBA season.

Listed on the roster as a 6’8” guard out of St. Joseph’s University (Division 3), Hall went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft last month, but signed to play with the Spurs at the NBA Summer League. Appearing in all five of the team’s showcase games, Hall averaged 14 minutes per outing, with a stat line of 3.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. His assist average was tied for the fourth-highest on the team, and he averaged less than a turnover per game. There’s something to be said for a smart distributor like that.

“He’s a facilitator,” San Antonio’s Malaki Branham said of Hall while teammates at the Summer League. “He can shoot it as well, but he’s a facilitator first.”

According to his NBA Draft profile, Hall had entertained entering the league in 2021 after being named Big 5 Co-Rookie of the Year. He decided against it and went back to St. Joseph’s for his sophomore season. The extra year saw him increase his stats across the board while leading his team in a number of categories.

What Does Jordan Hall Bring to the Spurs?

San Antonio lost one lengthy guard this offseason and now adds another one. Hall is no Dejounte Murray, but his college stats at St. Joseph’s, along with his wing-span, strike a resemblance.

In a press release announcing Hall’s signing with the Spurs, St. Joseph’s University notes that he recorded eight double-doubles last season and had double-digit assists in five games. In fact, his clip of 5.8 assists tied for 11th in the nation. A savvy hand like that could be valuable for the Silver and Black.

Hall is set to split time this coming season between the Austin Spurs of the G-League and San Antonio. While the Spurs have an abundance of guards, it is hard to declare any a “facilitator”. Tre Jones may be the closest that the team has at this moment, and Hall is more physically gifted. He now has some familiarity with the San Antonio players as well as some members of last year’s Austin squad that played in the Summer League. Hall is in a good position hit the ground running and plant his NBA roots.

What is a Two-Way Contract?

Two-way contracts sign commits a player to both a NBA team and their G-League affiliate. They are a great option for teams that want to get a better look at a player without going through the financial commitment of an NBA contract. Each team has the option to use a pair of two-way contracts to fill out their 17-man roster. Those players, however, come with certain restrictions.

The biggest factor with these contracts is that players under them can only spend up to 45 days with the NBA club. It is important to note that is “days’ not “games”. The rest of the time, players under two-way contracts are with the organization’s G-League affiliate. Fortunately for the franchise, they can’t be signed by other teams in the way that regular G-League players can.
