According to conversations in the San Antonio Spurs’ fan community, the trade of Dejounte Murray has put the eyes of Spurs Nation on shooting guard Devin Vassell to step into a leadership role. Vassell has won the hearts of many fans with his ability to remain consistent in his growth as a player since he was drafted to the organization in 2020. Many, however, are wondering what missing piece he will fill for this next generation of Spurs.

After speaking with a close source to Devin, I can say he understands the stakes of this coming season. It will determine what the Spurs’ next steps in the rebuild will be considering him. He is determined to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase his versatility as an athlete.

Devin Vassell is Putting in the Work On Court…

Compared to his rookie season with the Spurs, Vassell saw his playing time increased by 10 minutes last year. His scoring average went up by seven points per game, and raised his field goal percentage by two points as well. All of the improvements ultimately landed him in the starting lineup.

Once Vassell became a starter, fans saw more of his ability to shoot the three and defend. However, that isn’t all there is to him. He has been training consistently here in San Antonio and traveling to attend workouts with other athletes to continue developing his “complete player” style. The shooting guard is not shy about proving how valuable he is for a team.

The work ethic Vassell has displayed this off-season to solidify his slot is a familiar friend. It is something he has carried with him since before the pros. Vassell has only improved as a player since he stepped foot in the AT&T Center, and this season we shouldn’t expect anything less. Get the popcorn ready!

… And In the Public

Off the court, Vassell has spent additional time preparing to give back to his hometown of Suwanee, Georgia. On August 6th, he will be teaming up with ProCamps to host his first free basketball camp for children in grades 1st-12th. The camp is at Peachtree Ridge High School from 10 am to 1 pm EST. Children can expect to experience hands-on instruction, fundamental basketball skill development, games, and contests.

The best part is that Vassell will be in attendance, interacting with youth from the very place he grew up. Each child will leave with a signed souvenir from the rising star as memorabilia from this moment. There are currently 250 youth signed up, and slots are first come, first serve. If you know a child who would like to attend you can sign up at https://www.procamps.com/Vassell22

Devin Vassell is a name that won’t remain under the radar for long. He is expected to be a key component to San Antonio’s success this coming season. With the recent roster changes, there will be more freedom for Vassell to solidify his importance to the Spurs’ organization. On and off the court, he has provided some nostalgia for the fans by committing to being developed into a traditional Spur. Nonetheless, he has a mentality, drive, and playing style that can set the tone for the Spurs’ new era.
