Toros Off Season Changes

With the 2010-11 NBA Development League season just two weeks away, the Austin Toros are hoping the handful of changes they made in the off- season will help the San Antonio Spurs affiliate bring home their first D-League Championship trophy.

The front office relocated to a location further north, a foreshadowing of what was to occur with their arena. In July head coach Quin Snyder, a former Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year, accepted an assistant coaching position with the Philadelphia 76ers. Later that month Toros General Manager Dell Demps accepted the New Orleans Hornets GM position. The announcements didn’t stop there. In August the team announced they would be leaving Da Bullpen, aka the Austin Convention Center, for the glitzy Cedar Park Center. August also brought the addition of former Spurs player turned former Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry. GM Ferry will look over the Toros while operating out of San Antonio. After close to three months of searching for the perfect candidate the Toros announced Brad Jones as head coach.

Did you get all of that? New office, coach, general manager and a new arena. Are these the changes that are going to help the Toros bring a D-League trophy back to Austin?

If the changes don’t help the Toros improve their third-best-in-the-league record (32-18), the new arena could, at the very least, improve the fan experience. From a wider variety of concessions to a modern video scoreboard fans are guaranteed to have a better outing in Cedar Park.

What likely won’t change is the appearance of former All-Star Alonzo Gee. Gee is currently with the Spurs, but saw limited action during three pre-season games. It is very likely the Spurs will assign Gee to the Toros in the upcoming days.

Toros fans will be forced to wait two weeks for the team to step foot on the court and begin their journey to the playoffs. Their season kicks off on the 19th against the Maine Red Claws at 6:00 p.m. CST. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers will visit the Cedar Park Center for the Toros home opener on the 27th. Tip-off is set for noon.
