CEDAR PARK – After dismantling the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Monday night by a final score of 117-91, the Austin Spurs are one win away from a trip to the G League Finals.
Every single player for the Spurs logged minutes and score in Monday’s blowout, led by Derrick White’s 20 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Darrun Hilliard added in 19 points and four rebounds in 29 minutes. And lastly, Matt Costello made his presence known with 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
Austin’s defense stifled the G League’s best offense this season, holding the Vipers to just 91 points on the night. RJ Hunter and Monte Morris led the way for RGV with 20 points each. Isaiah Hartenstein was the other bright spot for the Vipers with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vipers, whose offense thrives on 3-pointers, went just 5-for-26 as a team from beyond the arc.
TURNING POINT
Austin had trouble holding on to the ball in the early going, committing five turnovers in the first quarter, but RGV failed to turn those miscues into points.
The Vipers did a tremendous job hammering Austin in the paint to the tune of 18 points in the first, but still only managed a four point lead to end the quarter.
The Spurs returned the favor in the second quarter, as Costello’s 10 points fueled Austin to an 18 point halftime lead that RGV never recovered from.
