Report: Former Spur Strickland arrested for DUI

Former San Antonio Spurs guard Rod Strickland has been arrested for DUI with a suspended license.

The university said in a statement that Strickland was pulled over while driving to work and it was looking into the possibility that there was a clerical error regarding the license. Strickland pleaded guilty in 2010 to driving under the influence and his driver’s license was suspended for 12 months.

Strickland, who is currently a special assistant with the University of Kentucky, also was charged with not having registered license plates and failure to signal.

Strickland played for the Spurs from 1989-1992 and is best remembered for the no-look, behind the back pass which sailed out of bounds in the critical waning moments of the 1990 playoffs versus the Portland Trail Blazers. The pass all but dashed the Spurs hopes of making it to the NBA Finals.

As for this unfortunate news for Rod, it’s not a good example to set for college players who look to him as a mentor and guide in life on and off the court. Let’s hope for his sake he can correct and learn from this going forward.
