They say after hitting rock bottom, the only place to go is up.

For the San Antonio Spurs, a 128-89 thumping by the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center on Wednesday night sure seems like rock bottom.

“We looked a bit lethargic after halftime,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said. “We were getting killed in fast-break points, second-chance points. That’s an indicator we weren’t very aggressive.”

San Antonio shot just 39 percent for the game and trailed by as many as 48 at one point. The Spurs shot 8-for-27 from three-point range and committed a season-high 19 turnovers.

Jakob Poeltl led the Spurs with 14 points, while Marco Belinelli added 11. DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge each finished with 10 points but shot a combined 9-for-20 from the floor. San Antonio is just 1-11 when Aldridge fails to score 20-plus points in a game.

Meanwhile, Minnesota (11-11), was led by Robert Covington’s 21 points. Both Karl-Anthony Towns and Derrick Rose added 16 points as the Timberwolves improved to .500 for the first time since Halloween.

After a competitive first quarter, the Timberwolves blew things open in the second. Minnesota went on a 17-2 run and took a 57-34 lead into the second half. The Spurs scored just nine points in the quarter as a result.

Minnesota improved to 7-2 since trading Jimmy Butler but San Antonio is just 3-7 in their last ten games.

“It’s embarrassing,” DeRozan said. “We let them do whatever they want. We just weren’t good at all tonight. You don’t want to get embarrassed.”

The Spurs are now 10-11 on the season and will return home to welcome the Houston Rockets (9-11) to the AT&T Center at 7:30 pm Central Time on Friday night.
