Main Event Preview
It was just over three years ago that Wallin faced Tyson Fury in 2019 as the champion was out to reclaim his lost belts. After 12 rounds in the ring, the bout went to the judges’ cards where the decision went to Fury unanimously and rather handedly. Wallin sure left his mark, however, giving Fury a cut above his right eye that required stitches. The loss was Wallin’s first of his career, and he’s kept his sheet clean since, winning his last four appearances. In the rankings, he’s the top heavyweight out of Sweden, good for 17th in the world.
If he can collect the win, defeating Olguin won’t do a lot for his standings, but it would be a great start to the new year. Olguin, 39, had a rough start to his career from 2008 – 2014, dropping three of his first four contests. Since returning in 2019, however, it has been a much different story. He ripped off eight consecutive wins by 2021. That put him in contention for the American Boxing Federation USA Heavyweight title. Olguin lost that contest and is still looking for his first rebound win. He only fought once in 2022, recording a mixed-decision draw against the undefeated Roney Hines.
Looking at the tape, Wallin seemingly has every advantage. He’s faced better opponents, he’s six years younger than Olguin, and nearly three inches taller. Both fighters are southpaws.
