Toros run away from Legends in big win

The Toros moved within one game of the eighth and final playoff spot by beating the Legends 114-99 Saturday. Squeaky Johnson led Austin with 26 points and helped fuel a 39-point fourth quarter that sealed the deal.

Austin was able to regroup from a four point loss Friday night and turn in a much more solid effort on both sides of the ball. For the game, the Toros shot 49.4 percent and held Texas to 39.8 percent from the field.

Leo Lyons had a double-double with 20 points and ten rebounds and is establishing himself as the go-to-guy on offense. He has scored at least 20 points in five of his last six games. The 6’9’’ forward is shooting 42 percent from three-point range and his versatility presents matchup problems for opponents.

Kevin Palmer had 17 points and seven rebounds. He has now hit double figures in his last four, with the Toros winning three of those four games.

Joe Alexander turned in his best scoring output of the season with 32 points in a losing cause for the Legends.

These two teams meet once more in Cedar Park on April 2 in the last game of the regular season. Over their last 12 games, the Toros are 6-6. If they continue at that .500 clip, it’s foreseeable that game could mean a lot in terms of a postseason birth.

For now they’re focused on closing out the remaining three games of their road trip strong. The next two are against Rio Grande Valley, the second best team record-wise in the D-League. Austin has matched up well against the Vipers this year, winning four of their seven meetings.
