Toros face D-Fenders tonight in game one of D-League championship

While the San Antonio Spurs are getting ready for the playoffs, and Spurs fans keeping a close eye on tonight’s Suns-Jazz game, the Spurs’ D-League team, Austin Toros, is just two wins away from their first ever D-League championship. The Toros kick off a three-game series with the Los Angeles D-Fenders tonight in Austin.

The Toros will have a tough road ahead of them. The D-Fenders have not lost a game in the postseason and posted the best record (38-12) in the regular season. The Toros had the second best regular season record (33-17) and will be led by the D-League MVP and former Spur, Justin Dentmon, as well as reassigned Spurs rookie Cory Joseph.

Joseph has averaged 11.3 points per game, 5.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in the playoffs for the Toros, pretty close to his season averages. He’s been putting in about 34 minutes a game and started all six playoff games so if the Toros are going to have a shot, Joseph will have to play well.

I know everyone’s excited for the NBA playoffs, but while the season winds down and some of the games don’t matter as much, it might be good to catch some competitive, championship basketball and support the Spurs’ D-League team. Also, how ironic is it that even Austin has to face Los Angeles for the title much like the Spurs had to in past playoffs versus the Lakers.

Game two of the series will be in Los Angeles on Thursday, and game three will be Saturday, also in L.A. (if necessary). You can watch the games on NBATV or streaming online.
