Toros drop close one against the Legends

In a game that could have put them in playoff position, the Toros couldn’t get it done at the end, losing 97-93.

Leo Lyons had the ball in his hand with six seconds left looking to tie the game. He drove the baseline, but Chris Roberts slid over and drew the charge with three seconds left, sealing the win for Texas.

Tied at 93 with less than 20 seconds left, new Toro Tre Kelley’s drive was blocked by Roberts. On their subsequent possession, Booker Woodfox knocked down a jumper from the corner, giving the Legends a 95-93 lead with six seconds left.

Roberts, who won the game with his two defensive plays, stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks.

The Toros put six players in double figures, including the newcomers Kelley and Kyle Weaver. Both guards played significant minutes and should play big roles in the stretch run as the Toros try to slide into the playoffs.

The addition of Kelley and Weaver coupled with the loss of Marcus Cousin makes the lineup smaller and it may take veterans like Squeaky Johnson some time to adjust. Johnson scored just five points and had no assists for the first time all season.

Austin was 14-24 (58.3%) from the free throw line compared to 29-35 (82.9%) for Texas, a stat all the more amplified by the final three-point margin.

The Legends’ Justin Dentmon led all scorers with 25 points. All four Toros bench players had at least 10 points and combined, they outscored the starters 51-42. Kelley led the Toros with 16 points.

They’ll try again tonight against Texas at 7 p.m. Austin is just 3-6 on the second game of back-to-backs this year.
