Wednesday afternoon Marc Stein of the New York Times reported San Antonio Spurs Assistant Coach Tim Duncan will be stepping away from his coaching role for the 2020-2021 season.

According to Stein, Duncan will return to his post-retirement role of helping the team at the practice facility with player development whenever he visits the facility.
Duncan spent last season with the Spurs in the assistant coaching role for the first time, though he didn’t join the team in the NBA Bubble in Orlando, Florida during the summer, instead, he stayed behind in San Antonio to work with LaMarcus Aldridge through his injury rehab.
With Duncan leaving the position, the Spurs will have an assistant coach vacancy alongside assistants Becky Hammon, Will Hardy, and Mitch Johnson on Head Coach Gregg Popovich’s staff.
Hardy and Hammon’s names also came up during the offseason when they were considered for head coaching vacancies with some teams prior to those teams hiring someone else.
