It has been a wild weekend for the San Antonio Spurs, but they’ll have to block out all the noise as they return to action Sunday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves. This is the third time that the two teams will meet, but the Spurs (4-2) already will bring a much different roster to the game. The story for the silver and black will be how the young squad deals with the adversity of the news cycle and injuries to continue their surprisingly hot start to the season. Minnesota (4-2) is just hoping they finally have their feet under them to put together another playoff run. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. CT from inside the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The season series between the Spurs and Timberwolves is even at 1-1. San Antonio took the first contest last Monday night 115-106 while Minnesota bounced back to take Game 2 134-22. In the Tuesday game, the Timberwolves seemingly couldn’t miss, connecting on 65 percent of their shots from the floor and 58 percent from deep. Defensive focus will certainly be a point of emphasis for the silver and black in this Western Conference mathchup.

San Antonio Spurs Preview

San Antonio’s outlook for Sunday’s contest took a serious hit late in the morning with the release of the injury report. Already missing Devin Vassell for the third consecutive game with a knee injury, both Jeremy Sochan and Josh Richardson have been listed “out” as well. Reports are that Sochan is dealing with an illness, while Richardson is dealing with a back issue. That is a serious blow to the lineup as both have started the last two games.

Spurscast: The Spurs’ Surprising Start to the Season

With so much shake-up around the team given injuries and Friday’s surprising release of second-year guard Josh Primo, the Spurs will once again look to lean on Keldon Johnson to provide a stable foundation. The ever-energetic forward is coming off a 33-point performance against the Chicago Bulls and pacing the team with 23 points per game this season. San Antonio will need everything he has against Minnesota, and possibly a little more. Of course, the team won’t want to over-exert him. There is hope that rookie guard Blake Wesley can build upon his break-out performance against Chicago. It would be ideal too if center Jakob Poeltl can continue to shoulder a larger offensive role as well.

Minnesota Timberwolves Preview

Including their win on Wednesday against the Spurs, Minnesota has won their last two, taking down the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night in LA. Anthony Edwards is really starting to roll this season, scoring 63 points across his last two games. He’s currently shooting a career-high 47 percent from the field, a stark contrast from the first game against San Antonio. He’s surely looking to take advantage of the depleted Spurs roster that is notably missing a strong defender in Vassell.

Perhaps the biggest matchup to watch on Sunday night is the battle on the boards between Rudy Gobert and Jakob Poeltl. Gobert’s season-lows on the glass have both come against San Antonio, recording fewer than 10 each night. He rebounded against the Lakers with 21 recoveries on Friday, including eight on the offensive end.

UPDATE: This article previously stated that this is the final game of the season between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves. The two teams will meet a final time on April 8, 2023 in San Antonio.
