SAN ANTONIO – Trailing the Charlotte Hornets by 13 points at halftime, the San Antonio Spurs came back out of the locker room late to begin the second half. What happened next could be a defining moment as they get ready to enter a tough road trip.

The Spurs rallied back from a 19-point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Hornets 114-90 at the AT&T Center on Saturday night. With the win, San Antonio has now won two straight as they get ready to embark on their annual Rodeo Road Trip.

“We competed in the second half,” Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said. “We didn’t compete in the first half.”

Charlotte was led by Miles Bridges’ 25 points while Cody Zeller posted 14 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists for the Hornets, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games.

Three Standout Players

Derrick White

The confidence in Derrick White’s level of play has been evident for some time over these past few weeks but Saturday night was another step in that right direction as he helped lead San Antonio’s comeback.

White finished with 12 points and five rebounds. He shot 50 percent from the floor was aggressive in finding his teammates and getting to the basket. His hoop and harm tied the game up at 72 all midway through the third and his second pass to DeMar DeRozan helped put the Spurs ahead for good.

Dejounte Murray

Another player who has seen his confidence grow over the past few weeks is Dejounte Murray. He showcased his skills on both ends of the floor as he and White played hardnosed defense to help the Spurs rally and keep their lead for a big win.

Murray had nine points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and two assists. On the defensive end, he had two big steals for scores and assisted on two buckets by DeRozan and Jakob Poeltl. If Pop can keep up this pairing with White and Murray to close games, the Spurs will be a tough out for teams in the second half of the season.

Jakob Poeltl

The Spurs got a big game out of their big man off the bench as he provided a big spark for the team in their comeback effort in the second half.

Poeltl finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and a block in 18 minutes of action. One of his steals, he finished with a pretty Eurostep at the rim for the score and was active on both ends of the floor.

“It’s big, especially with that second half that we had,” Poeltl said. “It really got us going. I hope we can carry that over into our road trip. The spirits are high right now.”
