The San Antonio Spurs’ losing streak increased to five games after losses to the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies at home. The Spurs fell behind by double digits against both teams, but San Antonio battled back in both games to take each opponent into crunch time. Against the Grizzlies, the Spurs had multiple chances to win the game but came up short in overtime.
Through the 12 games, the Spurs are now 5-7 overall and have the 20th-ranked offense and 29th-ranked defense.
Zach Collins On The Injured List
Earlier this week the Spurs announced Collins has a non-displaced fracture of the fibula head, and though the team didn’t provide an injury timeline return, he could miss up to a month according to reporting from the San Antonio Express-News.
In other news this week, rookie Malaki Branham was assigned to the Austin Spurs in the G-League. The move comes after Head Coach Gregg Popovich has gone to a shortened rotation in the guard/wing positions.
Charles Bassey’s Strong Start off the Bench
With Collins on the injured list, two-way big man Bassey has received early minutes as the backup five for the team. Bassey is making the most of his early minutes, with averages of seven points, six rebounds, one assist, three fouls, one steal, zero turnovers, and one block in 15 minutes per game (all stats rounded).
On offense, Bassey is taking the most efficient shot on the court, with 62% of his paint shots near the rim. On defense, he’s standing out in the early data with deflections, steals, contested shots, blocks, and defensive rebounds.
Tre Jones Running the Point
Through 12 games, Jones has continued to guide the Spurs as their starting point guard. Jones is the third leading scorer, he’s the leading player in assists, and steals per game on the team.
Jones has been attempting more three-pointers than last season and he’s made at least one three in all but two games this season.
