The San Antonio Spurs opened up their annual “Rodeo Road Trip” by destroying the lowly Phoenix Suns (18-38) by a final score of 129-81 at the Talking Stick Resort on Wednesday night.
After struggling on offense in recent games, the Spurs let it be known early that they’d come to win. San Antonio opened the game with 11 straight points and led 28-9 after one quarter of play. That alone set up a rout from start to finish for the Spurs.
Here are three standout players from Wednesday’s game:
Patty Mills: The fan favorite Spurs guard led the Silver and Black off the bench with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, going 5-for-7 from three point range.
Given Mills’ up and down season, a game like Wednesday night may just be what he needed. He was hot from three point range, hitting all but two that he took. He remained aggressive in the paint and from the outside. Let’s hope Mills can keep it up if Dejounte Murray remains out for a period of time.
Dejounte Murray: Speaking of the Spurs starting point guard, he finished with 14 points on 58 percent shooting in just 13 minutes.
Murray left the game in the first half with an ankle sprain and did not return. His status for Saturday’s contest is unknown at the time of this writing. However, the Spurs guard used Wednesday’s tilt with Phoenix as a chance to tune up his skills.
Danny Green: After having a poor offensive outing in his last few games, Danny Green also found the bottom of the net in the Rodeo Trip opener.
Green finished with 17 points and went 5-of-7 from three point range as well. Overall, he and the rest of the Spurs played very well on both ends of the floor for 48 minutes and kicked off the Rodeo Trip in style.
However, given the injuries from the Spurs and the teams they face on the trip, they will continue to need some big games from Mills, Green, and Murray to help out LaMarcus Aldridge.
