The Young and The Relentless

Monday night the Spurs were not able to close out in the fourth against the Denver Nuggets. Usually, the third quarter is where the Spurs fail to strike. Recently the theme of games has been a slow start on the offensive end led by a burst of energy in the second and third quarters to achieve a lead and then an inability to capitalize on the lead because of turnovers and untimely mistakes. Tonight the Spurs must play clean and minimize turnovers. The biggest lesson is going to be retaining a consistent pace while applying pressure defense without losing precision in movement.

The Memphis Grizzlies have a more established roster but they aren’t fully out of the woods either. They have their sights set higher than the Spurs with the likes of the Golden State Warriors, but that doesn’t let them off the hook in San Antonio. No one has expected San Antonio to pull off some of the wins they did in the early games of the season. If Memphis allows any leeway for Devin Vassell or Keldon Johnson to get to the three-point line consistently, it’s dangerous waters.

The Vassell Factor

So far rising star Devin Vassell has had 5 games all above 20 points including a career-high night with 29 points. One thing about this shooting guard is that he isn’t afraid to attempt any shot. He has been eager to be let loose on the court since being back from managing knee soreness. It seems like his teammates trust his ability to gauge when he should put up and when he should pass. His shot creation is progressing as well. Fans are noticing him incorporating more dribbling and pivoting away from the defender to adjust to the best positioning for a clear shooting pathway.

Brothers Brawl

So many exciting factors in this game, why not top it off with some friendly competition between brothers? Tyus and Tre Jones will have a lot to discuss at the Thanksgiving dinner table after this match-up. Spur Tre Jones may be able to brag about his developing three-point shot. Tre Jones is shooting 42% from the three while Tyus is cruising at a smooth 33% to start the regular season. Let’s see which point guard shoots better from the 3 tonight.

Team Work

The Spurs will have to play this game as a unit and keep up their high number of assists per game. They don’t have that one guy whom they can revolve around as Memphis does in Morant. Although they aren’t about Showboating on the court this is a good night for a couple of posters from Johnson and some swift driving layups to the basket from Jones. With emerging defender, Zach Collins out of the paint, The Spurs are relying on Jakob Poeltl and Jeremy Sochan to defend the basket against Center Steven Adams and a bouncy Ja Morant.
