Spurs Alamodome Game Attendance Update

The 2022-2023 NBA season continues to be a historic one for the San Antonio Spurs. For starters, the franchise is celebrating its 50th anniversary. On the court, the roster is the youngest ever under head coach Gregg Popovich, which understandably has come with some growing pains. On Thursday night, the team announced another monumental note for this season – the San Antonio Spurs vs Golden State Warriors game on Friday at the Alamodome has sold 63,592 tickets. The Spurs played home games in “The Dome” 30 years ago from 1993-2002.

This will set a new NBA game attendance record, previously set by the Atlanta Hawks in 1998 when they elected to host Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls at the Georgia Dome during his last season with the Bulls. That game was played in front of a crowd of 62,046.

Setting the new mark for attendance at a regular season NBA game isn’t enough for the Spurs as the team has already expressed hopes of completely selling out the arena with 65,000. That would be nearly 26,000 more than the team’s highest-attended game in the Alamodome, Game 2 of the 1999 NBA Finals.

San Antonio turned out even more fans than that Spurs game in 2011 for the first-ever game for the UTSA Roadrunners, according to the Alamodome’s website. A new record for a sporting event at the venue, 56,743 fans showed up to watch the Roadrunners defeat Northeastern State 31-3. The largest crowd for any event inside the Alamodome belongs to none other than George Strait who performed in front of 73,086 fans in 2013. He, of course, had the benefit of the crowd spilling from the seats to the floor as well.

The Spurs first announced their goal to set a new NBA regular season game attendance record in August when they released their promotional schedule. Tickets went on sale in September and the team has provided updates along the way. On December 19th, the Silver and Black provided an updated total of 45,000 tickets sold, still well short of the goal. That number surpassed 53,000 at the turn of the new year when it was announced that 90’s music artists Tag Team would perform during halftime.
