Spurs throttle Mad Ants in first half, manage to hang on for victory

CEDAR PARK – A 46-point first quarter by the Austin Spurs nearly put the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in a body bag, as the Spurs won by a final score of 126-117.

Darrun Hilliard lit the scoreboard on fire in the opening quarter, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field for 14 points. While his perfect shooting paced the team, the Spurs managed to shoot 79 percent in the first quarter to take an early 46-27 lead.

Both teams were hot from the field in a closely contested second quarter, but Austin’s ridiculous start led them into the locker room with a 21-point halftime lead.

With Austin struggling offensively in the third quarter, Fort Wayne gained control rather quickly, erasing a 27-point deficit. The duo of Stephan Hicks and Jarrod Uthoff combined for 16 points in the quarter, bringing the Mad Ants to within 12 points with one quarter to go.

The lesson this entire season has been that no lead is safe in the G League, and that was the case again on Sunday afternoon.

Fort Wayne eventually cut Austin’s lead down to just seven points behind Jamil Wilson’s 13 points in the frame, but the Spurs continuously answered the Mad Ants time and time again to secure the win.
