The San Antonio Spurs are looking at another solid year that should lead to the playoffs yet again. That means a relatively low pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and that is why you are presumably reading this.
This week’s prospect who we will be watching is Michigan big man Moritz Wagner. The 6-foot-11, 245-pounder contemplated going to the NBA Draft last year, but decided he needed another year to get himself ready for the league. It’s early in this college basketball season, but it’s fair to say that he made the right call. Here’s what he’s averaging so far this season:
- 14.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG
- 51.6 FG%, 27.3 3P%, 73.7 FT%
- 118.1 ORtg, 93.2 DRtg
Wagner has struggled to shoot from beyond the three-point arc so far this season, but that shooting percentage should even out after he topped out last season shooting almost 40 percent. He may not shoot that well again, but he should be shooting in the mid-30s by the end of the season.
Wagner may not turn into the shot blocker the Spurs could use, but he should be an interesting watch this season as the offense will be there for sure. The question will come down to if the staff thinks it can fix him up on defense or if his offensive capabilities outweigh his defensive liabilities.
