The San Antonio Spurs seem to be learning how to play without Kawhi Leonard and that should scare the league. Considering they are well over .500 and will surely get better once the former Finals MVP gets back into the lineup, that means a playoff spot is likely coming and another lower pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

That brings us to the weekly installment of Spurs Prospect Watch. This week will feature 6-foot-6, 224-pound guard/forward Bonzie Colson out of Notre Dame. He plays more like a big man and has an interesting skill set that should keep Spurs fans intrigued if they watch him throughout the season. He’s putting up ridiculous numbers thanks to an unorthodox playing style. Here are his stats from this season so far as of Dec. 4:

  • 18.8 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.4 APG, 2.6 BPG
  • 52.8 FG%, 29.4 3P%
  • 125.4 ORtg, 80.6 DRtg

Colson generally plays in the post and excels there as he can usually bully anyone guarding him. If a big is put on him, he’s fast enough to get around him and to the basket so he presents a major mismatch. He’s got a bevy of low post moves which would probably translate to the next level, especially since he won’t need to bulk up or anything.

He’s a solid three-point shooter and is a big enough threat from there to open the floor for others. He doesn’t take many shots from there — as you can imagine, most of his points come from inside the paint — but, he is a solid shooter as he shoots about 76 percent from the charity stripe as well.

Colson isn’t an elite ball handler by any means, but he is serviceable and that will be a skill he has to work on once he gets to the NBA. However, he is quite good at scoring on the move and off the dribble. He could easily be a microwave guy off the bench and can still play some defense too.

He’s a great defender with long arms and a strong upper body that will certainly bother ones and twos on the perimeter. He’s also a phenomenal rebounder even if you disregard the fact that he’s a little undersized. He is likely going to fall to the second round as many mock drafts see it and Spurs fans should be hoping he falls to them. He could be the steal of the draft if he’s taken at the right spot.
