Spurs name McDonald head coach in Austin

Ken McDonaldThe San Antonio Spurs have finally named the new head coach of the Austin Toros after Taylor Jenkins left to take a spot on Mike Budenholzer's bench in Atlanta back in July.

In a post about the loss of Jenkins back in July, I felt assistant Ken McDonald would be the obvious choice to succeed Jenkins because of his long track record with big programs like Texas and Western Kentucky.

According to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Spurs front office likely agrees with that sentiment as they have hired McDonald to take over as head coach of the Austin Toros.

McDonald should excel as head coach in the D-League as he excelled in player development with Western Kentucky. After losing Courtney Lee and Jeremy Evans, McDonald led a team, including San Antonio native Orlando Mendez-Valdez into the NCAA tournament.

Former Spur Ira Newble will likely remain as an assistant on McDonald's staff.
