For years athletes have been using their success in professional sports as a springboard to showcase their true passion: music. Inevitably a professional athlete will use some of his millions of dollars to buy a little time in a recording studio, lay down a few tracks and get publicly criticized for intentionally trying to decimate everyone’s eardrums.
I’ve never listened to San Antonio Spurs' Stephen Jackson’s rap album, I don’t really have the stomach for it, so for all I know he could be the best rapper since Tupac. I guess we have to give him credit for doing what he loves, and he’s not giving up. He’s actually gathering some reinforcements.
“Fourteen NBA players—along with artists like Rick Ross, Trina, Snoop Dogg, Birdman, The Game, Twista, T-Pain and others—are working together to create a collaborative rap album. The album, titled “Full Court Press Vol. 1,” will be curse-free and full of motivational lyrics. It is rumored that the project was spearheaded by San Antonio Spurs swingman Stephen Jackson, who has a storied history in the booth.”
“The full cast of NBA players includes Baron Davis, Lamar Odom, Juwan Howard, Trevor Ariza, Carlos Boozer, Glen Davis, Shawn Marion, Josh Smith and more. All proceeds from the album, which has a tentative release date of All-Star Weekend in February 2013, will benefit children in the community looking to receive education in the music business.”
Well, at least you know the money is going to a good cause, so if you can’t stand basketball players trying to pass off as rappers, you can buy the album and toss it.
It might be worth a listen for comedic value. I mean, Juwan Howard has to be pushing 60 years old by now, right? Can you imagine him trying to rap?
What do you guys think? Will you be busting down the door to buy Stephen Jackson’s collaboration with the NBA’s best musical talents? To be fair, they did get some pretty legitimate “real” rappers to join the crew, so maybe there could be a hidden gem in there that could rise to the top of the charts. Who knows?
