Spurs in the 6: Toronto Flashback

1

We know it’s confusing.

Spurs on Sixth dedicates its coverage to the Austin Spurs. Our “six” references the infamous 6th street in downtown Austin (even though they play in Cedar Park).

Meanwhile, Spurs in the 6, dedicates itself to a unique perspective on all things Spurs related, as Gareth and his family live in Toronto.

We’ll just blame any confusion on Drake.

Gareth and his Spurs in the 6 crew teamed up with Spurs on Sixth to give us some incredible access and gameday coverage we wouldn’t be able to obtain, seeing as no one on our staff lives in Canada.

So join us as we take a look back at what was a historic NBA Development League regular season game, as the Austin Spurs took on Raptors 905 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto…or, The 6.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL SPURS FAN: D-LEAGUE MARCH BREAK EDITION

As covered here on Spurs in the 6, the Raptors 905 defeated the Austin Spurs a week ago during a March break tip-off at the ACC.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Chicho, a fellow Spurs fan from Toronto, and his sons. We had a nice chat and traded Spurs stories, a couple of which are shared here in the Spurs in the 6 debut of Not Your Typical Spurs Fan.

How did you become a Spurs fan?

This is a must first question for every Spurs fan living outside of San Antonio. Much like myself, Chico became a Spurs fan when David Robinson joined the team. While Robinson was a draw, Chico was also a big fan of Sean Elliot while Sean was at Arizona.

“I followed him (Sean Elliot) to San Antonio. He joined David Robinson there and that’s pretty much it, the rest is history” Chico said.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL GAME RECAP

The Austin Spurs rolled into the 6 for an early March break tip-off (12 noon EST) against the Raptors 905 at the Air Canada Centre. Yours truly was there in press row to take in all the action. Welcome to the very first “not your traditional game recap” here on Spurs in the 6 – not your typical basketball blog.

PRE-GAME

Having previously covered the D-League Showcase (day one & two) with media credentials with the help of Project Spurs/Spurs on Sixth, this was my first time with media credentials for Spurs in the 6, I was very excited.

After getting my bearings and finding the media room, I tracked down a seat on the media court side row with the help of some helpful and friendly Raptors 905 staff. So far, so good.

Speaking of the media room, it was located right next to the room the Spurs were using as their dressing room. After typing up my pre-game notes, I passed Patricio Garino on the trainers table getting his ankle tapped. This struck me as microcosm of the D-League road to the NBA (can you picture NBA players in a semi-public area as the media walks by).

A big thank you to Gareth for supplementing our Austin Spurs coverage so well. Don’t forget, you can catch him and the rest of his Spurs in the 6 coverage here: Spurs in the 6 – Not your typical basketball blog.
