Spurs have shown interest in Gelabale

The San Antonio Spurs may be looking to add another piece to this team, even with a full roster at the moment. As reported by San Antonio Express News'  Jeff McDonald on Twitter, the Spurs have been interested in a Minnesota Timberwolves player:

Pop says Spurs have had interest in French forward Mickael Gelabale, who is on the second of two 10-days with Minnesota.

Pop: "He's somebody we thought about a lot over the last couple of years. We just never really had a position there." (@JMcDonald_SAEN)

At 6'7" and weighing 215lbs, Mickael Gelabale does sound like an interesting project especially with fellow Frenchmen Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, and Nando De Colo on the team. The Spurs haven't had availability for a few years with Richard Jefferson and his bloated contract demanding minutes, but the Spurs may have some room in the near future to possibly make a run at him.

Stephen Jackson and Manu Ginobili will be free agents this upcoming summer and may return next year, but there is most likely a free open spot sooner than that. The Spurs are looking to trade DeJuan Blair, which would open a spot on the team. He'll be a free agent this summer and most likely won't be returning to the team. Coach Gregg Popovich has also elected to go with Stephen Jackson at the power forward spot over Matt Bonner and Blair this year, which would give Gelabale a spot without disrupting the chemistry of the team.

With the Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan on their last years in the league, it's no secret the Spurs may be looking to cater to Tony Parker's preferences since this will be his team. With two of the Big 3 leaving, it'll make the transition smoother for the team and Parker to play a game with an easier flow to it over bringing in new pieces and trying to find chemistry in a long season.
