According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the New York Knicks could potentially sign free agent point guard Beno Udrih as soon as later today, as they've become the favorite to land the 31-year old guard.
What's interesting is that the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies were also two teams interested in Udrih this offseason Berman writes.
Memphis and San Antonio were also courting Udrih. Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald said last month a third point guard was important because of the possibility of injury to Felton or Prigioni.
Reading San Antonio had interest in Udrih comes as a surprise since he was drafted by the Spurs and saw his minutes dwindle down season after season in his three years with the team before he was traded just before the start of the 2008 season.
In fact, Udrih's least productive season was his last in San Antonio (2007) where his minutes (13 minutes) and points (4.7 points) have been his career lows since playing with three other teams afterward.
Udrih has developed as a solid backup point guard these days as he averaged 10.2 points and 6.1 assists in 27 games with Orlando to end the season after being traded by Milwaukee. He earned $7,372,000 last season (via Basketball-Reference) and was looking for a decent salary on the market but will most likely settle for the veteran minimum.
Though Udrih is expected to sign with New York, his name being reported as another point guard the Spurs were interested in does bring up the thought of whether or not San Antonio is confident in its backups behind Tony Parker – Cory Joseph, Nando De Colo, and Patty Mills.
Since free agency began, the Spurs have been rumored to be interested in several point guards such as Chauncey Billups (signed with Detroit), Mo Williams (signed with Portland), and Bobby Brown (who has until August 15 to find an NBA contract).
