Spurs eliminated from playoff picture amid three game winning streak

DES MOINES – A strong second quarter was all the Austin Spurs needed to dispatch the Iowa Energy on Tuesday night, winning by a final score of 92-79.

Orlando Johnson led all scores with 16 points, while also securing six rebounds. Daniel Nwaelele chipped in 14 points off the bench. Charles Garcia tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. And Hollis Thompson nearly double-doubled with 12 points and eight rebounds.

For the Energy, Wes Washpun had 14 points, four rebounds and six assists off the bench. Meanwhile, Jarell Martin and Perry Jones III both had 10 points each, with Martin also picking up seven rebounds.

Despite Austin shooting over 15 percent better than the Energy in the first quarter, the Spurs would only take a three point lead into the next frame.

The Spurs used a 13-2 run toward the tail end of the second quarter to blow the game open, behind eight points from McCamey and Nwaelele, to push their halftime lead to 16 points.

Even with the Spurs committing 19 turnovers on the night, the Energy would fail to capitalize on any mistakes their opponents made, and failed to outscore Austin’s poor shooting second half en route to defeat.

Unfortunately for the Spurs, they also needed some help from the opponent they face on Thursday.

The Santa Cruz Warriors defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, virtually eliminating Austin from playoff contention.
