The San Antonio Spurs are about to reach a milestone for the team that they thought wouldn't happen again after the team got older and started dropping from the defensive ratings these past few years.
The Spurs are about to enter their 14th season of reaching 50 wins this season, only two shy of this accomplishment.
This stretch began during the 1999-2000 season when the team went 53-29. The year before the Spurs only had a 37-13 record due to the lockout shortened season. This is impressive from the team, as they've kept the same core of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili since the 2002-2003 season.
This season the team is at 48-14 and will have a home stretch this month with only two away games, which may help the team cement another year of 50+ wins.
The team barely made it to this goal during the 2009-2010 season and that probably had to do with the new pieces the team inserted in with players like Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, and Keith Bogans. The Spurs were looked as being "too old" for much of that year, but they quickly bounced back and reached this feat easily during last year's lockout season at 50-16.
It's certain the team will get there this season, even without their MVP candidate in Tony Parker commanding the team. That's mostly owed to Gregg Popovich and the system he has put in this season, adaptng to the evolution of the league and also not sacrificing his principles in the process. It's a unique system that has players succeed when they're on the floor or being replaced by another player off the bench.
The San Antonio Spurs are the longest reigning team that's won 50+ games for consecutive seasons and they'll be looking to add to that streak as the years go by while they're still active in the title hunt.
