Shaq thought Spurs, Celtics would meet in NBA Finals

Recently retired Shaquille O’Neal was a guest on the Dennis & Callahan show to formally announce his retirement to the city of Boston.

During the interview, Shaq was asked how things may be different if he hadn’t got injured this past season with the Celtics. Shaq said the Celtics might be playing in the NBA Finals and felt after the Los Angeles Lakers were knocked out of the playoffs, he anticipated a Boston Celtics-San Antonio Spurs Finals:

I think we could have possibly be still playing right now. This is the first time in my career that all the powerhouses were gone. They brought me there to deal with Dwight Howard. [The Magic] were gone. Everybody wanted the [NBA finals] rematch. Then the Lakers got knocked out. I actually thought it was going to be Boston vs. the Spurs. The Spurs were knocked out. So, we only had to get through Miami and then I think it would have been pretty much smooth sailing.

A Celtics-Spurs Finals would have been epic. This would have been a dream matchup for all NBA fans and the story lines would have been numerous.

Shaq versus Tim Duncan. Boston’s “Big Three” versus San Antonio’s “Big Three.” Shaq or Duncan getting their fifth title. Kevin Garnett against Duncan. Ray Allen versus Manu Ginobili. Rajon Rondo versus Tony Parker. The list goes on and on.

However, if it did happen, I don’t think it would have been smooth sailing for Boston as Shaq mentioned. The Spurs would have made sure of that.

What are your thoughts Spurs fans? How awesome would a Boston-San Antonio matchup have been?
