Skylar Mays

The San Antonio Spurs are only a few weeks away from the NBA Draft (hallelujah!) and we are winding down on possible prospects to look at in that time. Since we have exhausted much of the forwards and big men, we are going to take a look at a potential second-round guard in LSU’s Skylar Mays.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound guard has the size to guard two positions and has a polished offensive game. He was asked to score in a variety of ways while in Baton Rouge and was efficient in doing so. Here are some of his stats from this past season.

  • 16.7 PPG, 1.8 SPG, 3.2 APG, 5.0 RPG
  • 49.1 FG%, 39.4 3P%, 85.4 FT%
  • 123.7 ORtg, 102.6 DRtg

Mays is an efficient, steady scorer and could be a microwave guy off the bench. He is comfortable on the ball or off it, which should make him versatile with the other guards on the roster. He likes to get to the rim and he enjoys finishing with contact. When he’s looking to avoid contact or he gets by his defenders he has a pretty creative layup package too.

He is a solid shooter at all three levels and goes to a pull-up jumper often as he doesn’t the ability to shake too many defenders off the dribble. He has a fairly tight handle and was a good straight line driver who used a nice spin in the lane to get to the rim.

He rebounds well for a guard his size and is a solid defender. He plays passing lanes well and is a smart defender. He knows when to leave his man and can even diagnose the other team’s plays as they set up their offense.

The former Tiger will have to work on becoming a little quicker as he isn’t a superb athlete compared to other NBA players. He has to shore up his handling and show teams that he can run offenses as he is seen as a combo guard who can’t really shake defenses on his own and also can’t fully run an offense either.
