We’ve already gone through an extensive list of possible first and second-round picks the San Antonio Spurs could take in this year’s draft. Instead of going through another potential prospect, we are going to go through a few potential Summer League signees. These are guys who are on mock drafts near the end of the second round or not on it at all. They could be diamonds in the rough like Dedric Lawson was for the Austin Spurs this past year.
Steven Enoch (Louisville)
Our first prospect is Louisville big man Steven Enoch. He’s a 6-foot-10, 255-pound big man who started stepping out and shooting threes his last two seasons with the Cardinals. He averaged 9.5 points to go with 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 51.6 percent from the field.
He’s solid in the post and has a sweet skyhook he uses in the middle of the lane. He has good touch inside the paint and is a decent shot blocker. He’s a bit of a late bloomer so if someone takes a shot on him and lets him develop, he could prove to be better than he was in college. He’s just started taking threes and has been fairly efficient so that is a skill that could show out in the Summer League.
Derrick Alston (Boise State)
The 6-foot-9, 188-pound forward would probably have gotten more draft love if he played on a better team or in a bigger conference. He put up 17.2 points, 3.1 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from downtown. His overall shooting percentage is troublesome, but he was using almost 30 percent of his team’s possessions while he was on the floor.
Alston is a solid shooter despite his percentages but really needs to hasten his shot as it’s mechanical and painfully slow right now. He can initiate the offense as a wing and he uses screens well to get by his defenders. He has basic handles to get him by defenders without a screen and he’s a decent finisher at the rim despite his lack of strength.
Isaiah Livers (Michigan)
The 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward is a strong player and a good shooter. He averaged 12.9 points, 1.1 assists and four rebounds a game this past season. He shot 44.7 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from beyond the arc. While he struggles to get by defenders — since he isn’t the fastest driver out there — his range could certainly help space the floor and give others lanes to drive.
Livers has a good motor and can score on the move when he does get by defenders. He’s a solid defender on the perimeter and recovers decently after a blow-by. He may have to play up a position because of his lack of speed, but he has the strength to do so.
Luka Garza (Iowa)
The Hawkeye big man is one of the more intriguing centers available in this draft. If he was playing in the 80s or 90s he would be considered a lottery pick. However, since we play in the “Sprawl Ball” era, he is considerably lower on mock drafts and big boards. The 6-foot-11, 260-pound center is excellent in the post, has a bevy of moves in there, and has shown potential for stretch big duties in the NBA.
Garza averaged 23.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 assists per game this past season. He has some playmaking ability in him and is a big body to go through for drivers and anyone posting up. He is not a great athlete and would struggle guarding quicker players, but should be a force at the rim if utilized correctly.
