The San Antonio Spurs have one less thing to worry about this offseason, as DeMar DeRozan informed the team Monday that he’ll be opting into his player option this year.

The decision isn’t shocking considering the state of the NBA and revenue losses as a result of the coronavirus that’s still plaguing the nation. By accepting his option, DeRozan guarantees he’ll still receive the $27.7 million owed, even if he doesn’t remain on the Spurs.

DeMar’s decision is a win-win for both sides, as rumors have been swirling that San Antonio is looking to build on their youth movement and move on from their two-headed attack of DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge.

With an expiring contract, DeRozan’s decision gives the Spurs another strong asset to work with as they potentially look to move up in the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday.

Fans are generally split about shipping off DeMar, who’s averaged 21.6 points, 5.9 points, and 5.8 rebounds in two seasons with the Spurs. This news keeps their options wide open, however, so be on the lookout for more Spurs-related news very soon.
