Richards helps Great Britain defeat Iceland, still not enough

RRAfter defeating Israel yesterday, San Antonio Spurs’ draftee Ryan Richards and Great Britain won their fifth game in a row with a close 72 to 70 victory over Iceland.

The game was tied at 69 with 29 seconds remaining before G.B.’s Adam Thoseby converted an and-one layup to put the Brits up 72 to 69 with seven seconds remaining. Iceland would get to the foul line with five seconds remaining, but they only converted on one of the shots.

Are you ready for another Ryan Richards stat line?

In just 18 minutes of action, Richards scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds, had one assist, and no fouls. He shot 5/11 from the field and 50% (2/4) from the three point line. He also went 5/6 from the free throw line. Spurs fans can be assured that Richards is a reliable free throw shooter as his numbers have reflected this time and time again.

After the game, Richards tweeted:

Got the win!!! Rolled my ankle pretty bad!! Getting treatment now!! But I think I’m done for the tournament people

Let us all hope that Richards’ ankle isn’t injured too badly; he can rest it as his team won’t be able to finish no better than 13th place according to Hoops Fix.

[B]ut it made little difference as an Israel victory over Finland earlier in the day meant the team will be competing for 13th-16th place.

Despite the win, GB finished third in Group H, meaning they will not advance to play for ninth place, and taking their 2011 Division B European Championship campaign from bad to worse.

Though they may be without Ryan Richards, Great Britain will play Romania on Saturday.

For Spurs fans wondering when Richards will be coming to San Antonio or Austin, I covered this issue in my latest column.
