Report: Spurs to workout Purdue F Hummel

0

The San Antonio Spurs never rest when it comes to scouting potential NBA talent despite the team being in the thick of things in the playoffs.

According to CBS Sports, the Spurs will workout Purdue senior forward Robbie Hummel on May 22 making this his first NBA workout.

Hummel is a 6’8″, 208 lbs. forward who averaged 16.4 points, shot 41.7% from the field, 38.3% from the three-point line, 82.5% from the free-throw line, 7.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 blocks in 32.2 minutes for Purdue last season.

Hummel suffered a torn ACL during the 2010-2011 season (his second time suffering the injury) causing him to sit out that entire season for the Boilermakers.

What stands out is his shooting touch for a big man (something the Spurs love to have on the team) which can translate into the NBA and help spread the court. However, with him having two ACL injuries, one has to wonder if his mobility and explosiveness will be limited.

In addition to his outside shooting, Hummel also possesses an excellent feel for the game and a very good overall skill level for a player his size. His lack of explosiveness limits his ability to make plays off the bounce, but he’s comfortable handling the ball anywhere on the floor, and he shows good vision and passing instincts.

An appealing trait to NBA teams will likely be Hummel’s willingness to accept his limitations and play within the flow of the team concept. Despite the heavy load that he carries offensively for the Boilermakers, he rarely forces the issue, as evidenced by the fact that he’s turned the ball over on only 7% of his possessions thus far, leading all forward prospects in our database. So there you have it Spurs fans. Seems the Spurs are doing their due diligence in looking at talent to add next season but what do you have to say about Hummel working out with the team?
