San Antonio Spurs fans have a little something extra to be excited about today. 
After leading the Spurs to the best record in the Western Conference for the second year in a row, Coach Gregg Popovich reportedly will be named the 2011-2012 NBA Coach of the Year (H/T to Mike Monroe).
Not only did the Spurs finish first in the West again, they were able to run down the Bulls and tie them for best record in the league. Even more amazing is the fact the team lost guard Manu Ginobili for a third of the season with a broken hand and didn’t miss a beat. Tim Duncan also missed eight games due to being old.
Certainly the award won’t make Pop flinch, but it’s an honor that’s long overdue. This is only the second time Pop has won the award. The last time? 2003 when the Spurs won their second championship.
Let’s hope history repeats itself this year.
