Report: Spurs’ Lindsey a finalist for Magic GM position

On May 27, a report broke that the Orlando Magic were going to be interviewing San Antonio Spurs DHassistant General Manager Dennis Lindsey and two members of the Oklahoma City Thunder staff, Troy Weaver and Roy Hennigan for the vacant GM spot in Orlando after the Magic fired Otis Smith and head coach Stan Van Gundy.

Earlier today, Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that Lindsey along with former New Orleans Hornets GM Jeff Bower have been named two of three finalists for the Magic GM vacancy.

Spurs exec Dennis Lindsey and ex-Hornets GM Jeff Bower are 2 of 3 finalists to be Orlando GM, sources tell Y! They’ll meet with owners soon.

Though it’s not confirmed, one would assume the third finalist is one of the Thunder representatives. Last summer, Lindsey was also on the Indiana Pacers, Portland Trailblazers, and Toronto Raptors radar for a GM position before they made their move to hire other GMs.

Our own Jeff Garcia wrote about this situation for Lindsey and the Magic on May 27, here’s what he had to say of the situation.

Dwight Howard is signed through next season but his long-term future is still in doubt. There are reports Orlando will trade him and reports that say they will make efforts to keep him. However, with no head coach and a salary-cap that’s wrecked, Lindsey would have a long road to hoe to get the Magic back to contention.

However, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. The Spurs have built a culture of winning, have the titles to back it up, and have produced many successful front off personal such as Thunder’s Sam Presti, Hornets’ head coach Monty Williams, and many others.

Indeed, Lindsey would have his hands full trying to keep Howard happy while also trying to fill reassemble a coaching staff and roster. But the Spurs had a fantastic season ending with the best record in the NBA, despite coming two wins short of the NBA Finals. It’ll be interesting to see if Lindsey is able to secure the position with the NBA draft just two weeks away.
