Last Thursday photos surfaced online showing unrestricted free agents Josh Huestis and Josh McRoberts working out with some current and past Spurs players in San Antonio.
Well, it appears Huestis will indeed be earning a training camp invite with the Spurs, according to Fred Katz of Mass Live.com.
Since he came into the NBA during the 2014 NBA draft, the 6’7″ Huestis has only played with the Oklahoma City Thunder during his career.
Last season with the Thunder, Huestis averaged 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game.
Katz also reported that Huestis will be signing a training camp deal that includes an Exhibit 10 clause. This means that if the Spurs waive Huestis before the season begins, his contract can be converted to a two-way contract.
The Spurs currently have both of their two-way contract positions vacant at the moment after Darrun Hilliard ended up signing overseas in Spain.
After the team officially signed Chimezie Metu Tuesday, the Spurs now have 14 players with guaranteed contracts. Quincy Pondexter has a partially guaranteed contract for the 15th roster spot and Huestis would fill up spot 16.
That means the team can still add four more players for training camp. If McRoberts and the Summer League Spur Drew Eubanks also get camp invites, then that would put the roster at 18 players with only two slots open.
A team can carry a maximum of 20 players on their roster during training camp and the preseason, however, the final roster must be trimmed to no more than 15 players and two two-way players.
