Report: Brett Brown made ‘strong impression’ with 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers are the lone NBA team that has still yet to hire a head coach. While new reports have surfaced about the candidates still in contention, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown has been rumored to be one of the favorites since last month.

In the latest report from Yahoo! Sports, Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach David Vanterpool has emerged as a serious candidate for the position. Brown and Boston Celtics assistant coach Jay Larranaga are still said to have made strong impressions in the interviewing process.

There is also still the option for them to stay in house and hire Michael Curry who is the strongest internal option.

There were lots of premature reports four weeks ago that Brown was indeed in line to become the next head coach for the 76ers. Those reports were shot down by Spurs general manager R.C. Buford who said, “To the best of my knowledge, I think people are jumping the gun on the process.”

It’s obvious the 76ers are not in any kind of rush to hire a coach which is surprising when most teams in the NBA put a priority on having a head coach in place rather quickly. Brown still remains a viable candidate in the search process and Philadelphia may just be sorting through more coaches just to have additional options.

The Spurs have already added Jim Boylen, former Indiana Pacers assistant coach, to fill the vacant spot that was left when Mike Budenholzer departed to become the head coach for the Atlanta Hawks.

If they lose Brown as well, the Spurs may have to look elsewhere to find another coach to fill the bench. There are also plenty of potential candidates currently on staff if they think any of their development coaches are ready for a seat on the bench.

I would expect the Spurs to move quickly on making a decision if things eventually come to that point.
