Thursday, the Phoenix Suns reached a buyout agreement with 6’11 forward/center Greg Monroe and he was officially waived from the team.

Once Monroe clears waivers, he’ll be eligible to sign with any team of his choosing. Wednesday, when the initial reports were surfacing, the Boston Celtics and New Orleans Pelicans were two teams being reported to have interest in Monroe.

According to David Aldridge of TNT, the San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards are also joining the list of teams with interest in Monroe.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com, the Pelicans appear to be courting Monroe aggressively and there’s even reports that they may be offering him a starting job.

According to the reports, Monroe is seeking a consistent role and minutes.

In looking at the Spurs specifically, San Antonio would have to waive a player since they currently have 15 players on guaranteed contracts.

Something else to consider when it comes to the Spurs is that Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich has been using more small ball units when the duo of LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol aren’t playing on the floor at the same time.

IF Monroe was added, there would be limited minutes at the 4 and 5, and the frontcourt could get even tighter when Rudy Gay and Kawhi Leonard eventually return.

At 27, Monroe played five games with the Milwaukee Bucks this season before being traded to the Suns, where he played in 20 games.

This season, Monroe has averaged 21.8 minutes, 10.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 25 games.
