Recap: Spurs remain undefeated as Simmons returns to Austin

CEDAR PARK – In his first action since the San Antonio Spurs assigned him to drive up I-35, Jonathon Simmons made sure not to disappoint.

The reunited backcourt duo of Simmons and Bryce Cotton would lift the Austin Spurs to a 114-103 victory over the Grand Rapids Drive on Tuesday afternoon.

Cotton led the Spurs with 21 points on 7-11 shooting. He also grabbed four boards and dropped a pair of dimes in 38 minutes of action. Simmons would chip in 17 points on 7-10 shooting, while notching three rebounds and four assists.

For the Drive, Henry Sims tallied a team-high 21 points to go with his nine rebounds. Lorenzo Brown added 19 points, three rebounds and five assists off the bench for Grand Rapids.

Despite the Spurs starting off as cold as the weather blowing through the Austin area this morning, the silver and black would receive a spark coming off the bench from Youssou Ndoye and Keifer Sykes, who combined for 26 of the Spurs 43 bench points.

The Drive would give the Spurs a scare early on in the fourth, cutting the Austin lead down to nine with the help of Lorenzo Brown flashing the hot hand from the field, but a quick 6-0 run that ended in a Ndoye alley-oop would put the final nail in the Grand Rapids coffin.

Austin moves to 3-0 with the win and gets a couple days off before traveling to Frisco to face the Texas Legends on Friday night. Grand Rapids falls to 1-1.

Game Notes:
– Cady Lalanne would get the start at center today, replacing Walter Tavares who has been recalled by the Atlanta Hawks. We’ll have more on that story later. Lalanne finished with 11 points and five rebounds, but missed all three of his three-point attempts.

– With Lamar Patterson also getting recalled to Atlanta, Demetri McCamey finally got a chance to shine. He scored 11 points, with seven coming in the first half, in just eight minutes of action.

– The Spurs had a nice crowd on hand this morning, thanks to School House Jam day at the Cedar Park Center. Attendance was reported at 5,070 – most of which were kids who cheered their loudest when the arena played the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song.
