Prospect Watch: Cotton’s Stock Rising

0

With JaMychal Green receiving a Gatorade Call-Up from the San Antonio Spurs nearly two weeks ago, the Austin Spurs presence in Prospect Watch has been somewhat lacking.

Luckily basketball is a team game, and no one knows that better than the Austin Spurs (17-9), who find themselves still leading the Southwest Division despite dropping two out of their last three games. And their bright spots are still being recognized by the D-League’s Prospect Watch for the final week of January.

#11 – Bryce Cotton, G

Cotton’s been lighting it up from beyond the arch this past week, shooting 50% on three’s in two games, while averaging 19.5 points per game; just a shade under his season average of 20.2 points per game. Our very own Michael De Leon had a great write up on Bryce Cotton’s NBA prospects going forward:

Thought of as more of a one speed, slicing and scoring point guard, he has displayed an outside shot and the ability to serve primarily as a pass-first guard when needed.

With several NBA teams now able to sign players to 10-day contracts, Cotton could become a prime target of several NBA teams that need help at the point. Often overlooked in league’s prospect rankings due to being on a deep team that also featured JaMychal Green, before he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs, Cotton now gets some of the spotlight.

#18 – Orlando Johnson, G

Cotton’s backcourt teammate secured the 18th spot in this weeks Prospect Watch. The 25-year-old Johnson had his best game versus the Texas Legends earlier last week, leading the Austin Spurs with 23 points and nine rebounds, as the Spurs fell short to the Legends 113-110. At 6’5, Johnson doesn’t have ideal size for a shooting guard, but his 6’11 wingspan could definitely help some teams on the defensive end of the court.
