NBA free agency will officially begin July 1, 2018. The tables below show potential free agents that could become available this summer.
Using player height or the positions from CleaningTheGlass.com, I’ve grouped all the potential free agents into five categories: Points, Combos, Wings, Forwards, Bigs
Next to the players name is the their current status, which has the following meaning:
UFA – Unrestricted Free Agent – During free agency, this player can talk and sign with any team who has interest in him.
RFA – Restricted Free Agent – If a player’s current team tenders him a qualifying offer by June 29, he will be a restricted free agent on July 1. This means if he signs a contract with another team after the moratorium (July 6), his current team has the option to match the contract and retain the player within two days, or they can decide to decline and let the player sign with the team who has interest in him. If the current team doesn’t tender a qualifying offer by June 29, then the player will become an unrestricted free agent.
NG – Non-guaranteed contract – A non-guaranteed contract means the current team has the option to waive a player by a certain date and the player will become an unrestricted free agent, or, if the team doesn’t waive the player by a certain date, the player’s salary will become partially or fully guaranteed for the next season and the player will remain on the roster.
PO – Player Option – By June 29, a player with a player option has two choices: 1) exercise their player option for the next season and remain with their current team, or 2) decline their player option and become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
TO – Team Option – Before a certain date, the team has the option to 1) exercise the team option for a player and keep them on the roster for next season, or 2) decline the team option and the player will become an unrestricted free agent.
ETO – Early Termination Option – Carmelo Anthony of the Oklahoma City Thunder is the only player with an Early Termination Option this summer. Per BasketballInsiders.com, he has until June 23 to use the early termination option. If Anthony uses this option, he could become a free agent July 1, but, he’d be terminating the $27.9 million that he’s owed next season.
Now to the free agents by position:
These are pending free agents because as explained above, decisions needs to be made by either the players or teams to figure out who will be entering free agency over the summer.
