New Orleans Pelicans Assign Diallo to Austin

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Pelicans announced yesterday that they will be assigning forward Cheick Diallo to the Austin Spurs via the flexible assignment rule.

The 6-foot-9 Diallo was drafted out of Kansas with the 33rd overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, before being traded to the Pelicans for the 39th and 40th overall picks.

Diallo has only appeared in one game with the Pelicans this season, tallying one rebound and one block in six minutes of action against the San Antonio Spurs.

“We have a guy with him down there,” Pelicans Head Coach Alvin Gentry told ESPN. “Obviously, we’ll have guys go see him and go to practice and things like that. But we also know those people there and that’s why we chose to put him there.”

Gentry along with Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps have spent their fair share of time in San Antonio, so it’s easy to see why Austin is their preferred destination in terms of Diallo’s assignment.

“He needs to be out on the floor playing, learning a lot about the league and what’s going on,” Gentry told The Times-Picayune. “I think he can get some valuable time in the D-League and that’s why we sent him down there. His problem is that he just hasn’t had the experience of being out on the floor playing.”
