Ferris State Bulldogs vs. Colorado School of Mines Orediggers

The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (12-2) and Ferris State Bulldogs (12-1) football teams will travel to McKinney Texas this weekend to square off for the NCAA Division II Championship. The CSM Orediggers are looking to unseat the defending champion FS Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have the better record going into the championship game but the Orediggers have more momentum. The Orediggers destroyed Fort Lewis 80-0 and scored 40-plus points in their last four games. The bulldogs may not be lighting the scoreboards as much as their opponents but it’s never smart to count out a defending champion. This should be a high-scoring affair, and you won’t want to miss this game.

NCAA Division II Championship Preview

Colorado School of Mines Orediggers

After a crushing defeat against Valdosta State in last year’s NCAA Division II semifinals, the Orediggers are looking to finish this season as champions. They won this year’s semifinal against Shepherd University in front of a sold-out home crowd of nearly 7,000. Their senior quarterback John Matocha went 28-of-34 for 371 yards and five touchdowns. When asked about how he left about playing for a championship Matocha had this to say, “It’s where we belong. This is the expectation, The job’s not done, we still have one more to play…” Orediggers’ head coach Brandon Moore will be looking for Matocha to lead the team one more time this weekend. When asked what the semifinal victory meant to him Moore said, …We learned that we belong to be in those big games. We belong to be competing for championships.”

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are fighting to defend their title and win their second championship. They know the Orediggers like to attack by air, and they are one of the top defensive teams in Division II. Look for The Bulldogs to force bad passes for interceptions and force their opponents to run the ball. They proved that they can put up points themselves in their 38-17semifinal victory over West Florida. It may not be a string of 40-point games going into the championship game, but the Bulldogs have to like their odds. Very few teams have been able to have an effective passing game against them, and with two teams that can light up the scoreboard, it will come down to who plays the better defense. If the Bulldogs can control Matocha even for one half of the game it may be enough to give them the edge for back-to-back championships.
