Main Event Preview

Wilson (11-1-0, 7 KO) has been climbing up the contender ladder in the WBO for the last two years, especially in 2022 when he first claimed the Asian Pacific title, followed shortly by adding the vacant international belt. The only loss on his professional record came partway through 2021 in his first title challenge. There, he fell to Joe Noynay by TKO in Round 5. Last spring, Wilson got revenge in a rematch with Noynay by way of a second-round knockout, earning him the international belt. His quick ascension to challenging for the WBO super featherweight title is all about momentum. It will not only be his first world title but his first professional fight outside of Australia.

Navarrete (36-1-0, 30 KO) is the toughest challenge that Wilson has faced. “Vaquero” has been fighting title bouts nearly exclusively since he claimed the WBO World Super Bantamweight title in 2018. After five defenses of that belt, he made the climb to featherweight in 2020 with a TKO victory over Uriel Lopez Juarez. That set him up for a shot at the vacant WBO Featherweight title against the undefeated Ruben Villa, one that he collected with a close unanimous decision judgment. Now the Mexican cowboy is ready to wrangle another division title and extend his 31-fight winning streak. In his brief stint at 126 pounds, it is worth noting that the knockout artist’s power seemed a bit less lethal than at the lighter weights, with two of his opponents taking him the distance.

The tale of the tape leans in the favor of Navarrete, not only due to his experience but his build as well. Despite measuring two inches shorter than Wilson (5’9½”), Navarrete will have a two-inch reach advantage as well. Both athletes fight from the orthodox stance and are of similar age in their mid-twenties. There is still the matter of how Navarrete will handle larger fighters like Wilson who have steadily competed at 130 pounds. Wilson, the 12th-ranked super featherweight in the world is, nonetheless, a serious underdog at +800 compared to Navarrete at -1600.
